How many times have you been late to work and worried yourself sick over the possible consequences?

I recently slept through my morning alarm by a full hour. Nothing was packed for the day. The gym I work at? One of Austin’s busiest gyms for the early morning rush.

I don’t just work there -- I’m the person who unlocks the front doors and turns the lights on before the sun has even come up.

While a crowd was forming in the parking lot, waiting to be let in, I was cowering under my warm covers in a cold sweat, picturing the angry look on their faces -- you know the one.

After all, they have busy schedules to keep -- just like you and me -- and I hated the thought of letting them down.

On any other day, this would have set me in a full-blown panic and downward spiral of self-criticism and negativity.

However, this was my 5th day in a row taking Serotonin Brain Food.

 And let me tell you…

  • There was no hyperventilating
  • No self-sabotaging thoughts
  • No self-doubt or crippling anxiety
  • No self put-downs or negative thoughts
  • No stressing out over an outcome that was out of my control

Instead, I took a breath, accepted the situation, and quickly collected the things I needed for the day. Then I drove to work with a cool head, ready to face the consequences -- which weren't that bad after all :)

Could You Have a Serotonin Imbalance?

You’ve probably heard that serotonin is a neurotransmitter associated with positive mood and happy thoughts.

When we have healthy levels of this brain chemical, we feel happier, more positive, and better able to approach the day with confidence and a cool head.

But when serotonin is imbalanced (too much or too little), you might stop feeling like yourself.

Do you ever have those days where you just feel off, or not quite your usual vibrant self?

The most common form of serotonin imbalance is deficiency, and the most widely recognized symptom is feelings of sadness or "the blues"  and the loss of pleasure.

Signs you might have a serotonin imbalance include:

  • Anxiousness
  • Compulsiveness
  • Depressed mood
  • Sleep-cycle disturbances
  • Gastrointestinal distress
  • Food cravings or increased appetite
  • Low libido
  • Irritability
  • Mood changes
  • Digestive health issues
  • Joylessness
  • Sense of overwhelm
